I couldn’t resist sharing this photo of an anonymous handsome stranger (okay, he’s a member of my family) reading my novel The Dying Beach in Krabi province, southern Thailand. Most of the novel is set in Krabi, on the exquisite Andaman coast.
A good book, Rita Felski writes in Uses of Literature, make you feel ‘sucked in, swept up, spirited away’. So if you’re not fortunate enough to be in a position to take a holiday in Thailand right now, for a fraction of the cost, you can be transported there by reading The Dying Beach.

What a perfect photo! I’ve never been to Krabi, but your novel – and this shot – have certainly made me want to go there, Angela. And I was really interested in (and appalled by) the environmental issues in The Dying Beach.

It’s a beautiful part of the planet, Sue, even with tourism/development. And the environment is better cared for in Krabi than on other parts of the Thai coast, largely because most of the land is owned and managed by locals.

Great photo. And yes, it is the right place to read the excellent book, The Dying Beach. I couldn’t put it down once I’d started it.
My latest escapist reading took me to the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. I read the Lewis Trilogy by Peter May, and so often did I wish I was on its coast.

The Lewis trilogy sounds intriguing, Kathy. Amanda Curtin’s wonderful novel Elemental took me to that part of the world…but it’s too cold for me, I fear 😉

Well, New York City in the summer, especially now with global warming, is no pleasure. I spent my days in my a/c room, freezing at times. You’re probably used to hot weather in Oz.
I have to get Curtin’s book.
Peter May does such a good job of describing life on the Isle of Lewis, the weather, the scenery,, but also how hard it is to earn a decent living, daily life, a lot. He writes excellent character development. The stories are good, too.
