Video: Dicks vs Dames

Ballarat Writers Inc has released the video of the great debate, Dicks vs Dames, held at the Death in July Festival in collaboration with Sisters in Crime Australia. Arguing that men write better crime fiction than women are Vikki Petraitis, Leigh Redhead and yours truly. Arguing that dames do it better are Robert Gott, Andrew Grimes and Jarad Henry.

This is hilarious viewing. The audience laughter is real, and adjudicator Dominic Brine barely keeps it together.

So set aside an hour, pour yourself a cup of tea or glass of wine, click the link here and enjoy!

I will watch it this weekend. I can’t wait! I’ll make some tea (iced; it’s hot here) and put my feet up and watch it.

The Australian sense of humor makes it in New York. I’ve watched half of the video, had to break as Jarad began. I almost fell off my chair at Vikki Petraitis’ presentation. And Leigh Redhead was funny, too, reading those “love” scenes written by men. Robert Gott sure took a lot of ribbing well. But his line that his sister tormented him with the “horrors of menstruation” at the age of 5 also knocked my socks off.
I did have trouble with hearing the M.C. and some of Gott’s talk.
My assessment so far is that the Dames prepared a lot more than the Dicks, even citing literary references, so they did their homework. And also, the women spoke more strongly and into the microphone, no muttering or looking downward.
I can’t wait to see the second half.

I finished watching it, laughing all the way. The Dames were definitely taking this much more seriously and were well prepared to argue their case. The Dicks, well, they showed up and were funny, too.
Only problem is that I couldn’t hear everything, especially the men, who sometimes didn’t speak directly into the microphone, but muttered a bit.
If the written transcript is ever available, please let us know; then I could catch what I missed.
You, Ms. Savage, were excellent. Leigh Redhead and Vicki Petraitis were very funny — and Vicki really lets go some zingers at the Dicks, hilarious every single comment. I must find her books.
And, such as it is, I’m sure the resident 8-year-old will have to wait awhile before seeing this.
